PRS Singlecut pre-lawsuit guitars

For anyone wishing to purchase a PRS Singlecut who gees across the phrase 'pre-lawsuit', then here's some guidance. PRS guitars first launched the Singlecut guitar in 2000 but had to cease production in July 2004 when Gibson Guitars Corp raised a lawsuit against them claiming that the Singlecut was a copy of the Gibson Les Paul. After a lengthy court process, the United States Court of Appeals reversed a lower court decision and ordered the dismissal of Gibson's lawsuit against PRS. In the litigation, Gibson alleged that concert goers in a smoky venue would not be able to differentiate between the Singlecut and a Les Paul. This was rejected by the court as the two different products could not possibly be confused at a point of sale, i.e, in a store. Production of the Singlecut resumed late 2005.The point of this guide is to explain the circumstances surrounding the lawsuit, but more importantly to highlight the fact that some sellers seem to see fit to emphasise the 'pre-lawsuit' tag in their advertisment, almost suggesting that pre-lawsuit guitars are worth more because they are no longer made. Do not be taken in by this; PRS Singlecuts are very much back in production following an unnecessary 'time-out'. 'Pre-lawsuit' is of no consequence whatsoever other than to signify that the guitar is one of the earlier models, i.e., built between 2000 and July 2004.
